IWOOT (x): Street Art Shelving

Following on from Chris' post about graffiti-by-selective-cleaning, I just stumbled across these rather natty shelf units on Inhabitat. They're 'designed' by a guy called Ryan Frank, who takes plain boards down to Hackney and sticks them on walls in prominently graffiti'd areas. After a couple of weeks to 'mature', he takes them down again and makes furniture from them. It's another good example of 'less is more' in design terms - and I think it looks pretty cool.

Very cool concept, though I'm not keen on the final form of the shelving. The chipboard isn't doing it for me.

I don't like them - the design is awful, and really wasteful of space. The chipboard just looks crappy and the wheels are a bit unnecessary. They sort of look a bit edgy and cool all together and against a white background - although not exactly aesthestically pleasing - but can you imagine how bad they'd look in anyone's home?

The design's a pretty strong statement to have in anyone's home, that's for sure. As for the chipboard, I think it all depends on the quality of the finishing. We're used to seeing chipboard slapped together as a hoarding, but if it's finished well then I think there's no reason why it couldn't take pride of place in someone's trendy loft space.

I'd never find anything, well maybe a couple of spray cans.

Not for me, reminds me too much of my squatting days, used to use that sort of stuff for kindle.

He could have at least mounted the whole units outside, and let people paint them.

Ha! Excellent concept!

I'd like it if it didn't look so much like a scrambled swastika.

I like the concept but think they'd work best in a pre school or kindergarten.
