d3o hats

FINALLY available in the UK! Yay!

http://www.snowfusion.co.uk/sc/367/Ribcaps.htm

Somewhere there's a rather alarming video of someone swinging a baseball bat at someone's leg encased in this freaky stuff, d3o. Failing that, though, here's a link to a news story about it:

Anyone fancy buying me a hat for Christmas?

(btw, sorry a out the NY Times links in the previous post. I was able to see them for a bit and only after I posted the link did they blank out and do their usual 'subscription only' thing. I forgot.)

//How StructUre ™ works:

Upon impact energy rich electrons induce a rearrangement and reaction of additional molecular cross-links within the StructUre ™ material. Dependent upon the effective electron dosage, this results in a transition of the StructUre ™ from a very flexible material into a semi-rigid or even fully rigid state. Optimal energy absorption resulting from visco-elastic behaviour and electron induced cross-linking

Roughly translated, this means upon impact the StructUre ™ material changes from a lightweight flexible material into a semi-rigid or fully rigid state depending on the size of the impact. This cushions the Ribcap user's head protecting them from bumps, cuts and grazes…//

You ought to post this on Underdone

Got me thinking of posting a Liquorice Helmet on HB - Liquorice (Bassetti) is dilatant

You could keep hot dogs warm in some of those by removing the stuffing.

What's the difference between d3o and StructUre? It may be lighter but is StructUre as good?

How the heck should I know? All I know is, I put it on my head and hit it. Ow. Maybe I didn't hit it hard enough, but that's not an experiment I was keen to pursue.
