'Tis the season for Christmas wish lists

funny you should post this. I have beeen musing for a couple of days now (and I am probably very very dim and the explanation is probably very very simple) why do scissors not cut when you hold them upside down? I'm sure it has to do with pressure but pressure is pressure whether up or down.

It doesn't make much sense, but I find I am adding outward pressure with my thumb through the hole in order to cut, especially if the scissors are old. If upside down the scissors actually spread open more, and the compensating thumb pressure isn't there mostly because of the shape of the hole. I find brand new scissors will cut either way.
