Semapedia

I've been watching this for a
while. Basically, it's a system for allowing your phone to read URL
addresses directly from a picture using the cameraphone. I think this
is dead exciting, although apart from putting it on your business
cards, and possibly using it in museums (instead of those little
description plaques), I'm blowed if I can think of any immediate uses.
Can you think of any? I desperately want to use it for something, but I don't know what!

Responding to adverts of all kinds. Never mind RFID technology - you can now go to any website that you find printed (saving you the whole typing malarky!)

Back when the Internet first became a Big thing, the Wall Street Journal tried tying its paper articles to its online information, with little tags you could type into the web site. Complete flop.

This is interesting, because with camera phones, at least there's a chance people will actually follow up.

But my understanding is that most Asian phones have bar code scanners, and that has allowed a lot of places to integrate real and virtual worlds more seamlessly.

That's right. The bar code has taken off in quite a big way in the likes of Japan. The door is well and truly open for some innovative applications. It's just trying to find them...

Yeah, yeah, but what can I use it for now? Remote postcards directing people to your phone blog...nah. The one I think would be fun is to have spoof museum bits dotted around the place - e.g. " This very bollard was once leaned on by Robert Louis Stevenson during his Dysenteric Period. Historians suspect he was mostly wearing tweed. Famous for his moustaches..." etc., etc.

You could tenuously hyperlink from museum exhibits to your halfbakery ideas? For instance, at the Transport Museum you might have a plaque allowing the reader to find out more about the fascinating seat device...

A barcode reader with a list of all UTC codes as well as prices and availability (so you can shop and know when you're getting a deal - and quickly check that a compilation CD has your favorite track on it)

".com"="run like the devil's after you."

I thought the same thing... It's handy, but what for - most URLs on posters are deliberatly short and uncomplicated.

Text (translation) to speech, that'd be handy
