Cows are a serious business...

Edinburgh has been hosting an art 'installation' for the last few months. Every so often you'll turn a corner and be confronted with a brightly painted cow. There's quite a lot of them, but here's just one or two that I happened to pass when I had my phone in my hand...

One of them was abducted from Princes Street Gardens. Was found the other day, more or less safe and sound.

There's another one missing from the Royal Mile. Must have taken a hell of a lot of effort to shift it.

I've seen these cows before, too - a few years ago they debuted back in London. There were a couple sitting outside the Royal Opera House, as I recall.

Cool! They did something like that here in LA but with angels. I like the cows better. The radioactive green one's my fav.

There used to be one in Horsham, by the station.
I think it was a marketing ploy.

In Washington DC when the Ling-Ling or Xing-Xing was expecting her cub, there were giant painted pandas on street corners, at shopping centers, etc. It was an art contest I believe.

Seth Godin - Purple Cow? - I wonder if he had anything to do with it

We had 20 or so scattered around Brisbane a few years ago. They did the same thing in Singapore, but with lions.

I have photos of the kids, proudly sitting on top of a number of them both.

Mine, too. Did her flip side look the same?

Do you know, I haven't looked? I'll have to check.

Yeah, saw them in Sydney as well.

I am quite fond of the cow parade, I am, if for no other reason than it brings unexpected colour to what is an otherwise crushingly drab city. There aren’t so many round my way – the CBD seems to revel in its joylessness – but of the few scattered about Festival Square and the Usher Hall, my favourite is Urbantrude, a green and purple beast, spattered with what look like cuttings from copies of the Metro (free news-wire regurgitating UK commuter tabloid).

Shame there aren't any Highland cattle in the parade, though.
